Browser: The software that lets
you (graphically) view web pages.
The site was designed using the current
HTML standard (4.0), which includes the use of cascading
style-sheets...in other words, the current web design
techniques. Not all browsers fully support these features yet.
While you should be able to view the site using a version 4 or
higher browser, the website will perform and look best with
Internet Explorer 4 or 5, or Netscape 6, as this browser best
supports the current web technology and allows for an enhanced
design. The website is chocked full of goodies. Treat yourself
to the best of "Brunswick County Government Online". (As other
browsers are released that equally support the current
technology, they will be linked here.)
If desired, these browsers can be downloaded by simply
following the links below. (A new window will open, allowing you
to download the program while you continue to use the Brunswick
County Government website.)

- Internet Explorer 4.0
- AOL 4.0 or higher **
- CompuServe 4.0 or higher **
** Both AOL and CompuServe's browsers are
driven by Internet Explorer (a scaled-down version). You may use
the full version of Internet Explorer by simply starting
Internet Explorer once you have connected to AOL or CompuServe.
(See next item.)
Many people do not realize
that once connected to the Internet (whether through AOL,
CompuServe, or a local internet service provider), a user can
use any browser that he/she wishes to surf the web -- even if
their internet software came with a particular browser.
USING INTERNET EXPLORER:
Internet Explorer 4 (or 5) is
automatically included with Windows 95 or 98 and should install
automatically, unless you have specifically deselected it during
the installation process. Once you have connected to the
Internet, simply click the Internet Explorer icon on your
desktop. If you do not have that icon on your desktop, click the
"START" button, select "PROGRAMS", and then select the Internet
Explorer option. And, off you go!
USING NETSCAPE:
Netscape 4.x has many bugs and poorly
supports HTML standards (specifically stylesheets). Netscape 6
appears to be a stable, standards-compliant browser. However, if
you want to use Netscape (Communicator 4.51 or higher, or
Navigator 4.06 or higher), here are a few tips:
- If the web page does not display
properly, you may need to click the "RELOAD" button on the
Netscape menu. In particular, you might need to do this if you
resize your browser window.
Problem downloading software? If,
for some reason, you cannot download Internet Explorer 5 from
the internet, you can checkout a CD-Rom of the software from one
of the Brunswick County libraries. (Coming soon!)
The site is navigated using either the
"left Menu" or "top menu" buttons. The "left menu" lists
specific areas of OurClark.com.
The "top menu", deals with more general
areas of our site.
Just click on the links to get to that
area. It's actually quite simple.
