Mayor Salvatore Bonaccorso and Town Council Members joined the annual springtime festivities associated with opening day for Clark Girls Softball and Little League on Saturday April 17.
This year’s event started with the traditional parade of teams down Westfield Avenue but for the first time, there were no vehicles in the parade or candy tossing to spectators. Officials determined that considering the ongoing pandemic, it would be best not to crowd teammates into the confines of vehicles.
Instead, teams, coaches and parents marched down Westfield Avenue with balloons, banners and each other in celebration of a new season.
As the parade approached the Clark Recreation Center the girls’ teams stopped before heading to their own fields behind the gymnasiums and cheered the boys on as they continued toward their Little League fields,
Mayor Bonaccorso reminded crowds at both fields that they had come a long way from the limitations of 2020. “Last year there was no parade no smiling faces, barren fields throughout the summer and spring, sad times, but we got through it,” he said. “I want to thank all the players, presidents, boards, team moms and parents for making all of this happen again this year.”
Bonaccorso went on to introduce Council Members Pat O’Connor, Angel Albanese, Jim Minniti, Bill Smith and Steve Hund. He also introduced Recreation Director Ralph Bernardo and the newly hired Director of Communications and Business Development, Elizabeth Clee.
