Union County Confrims West Nile Virus in Local Mosquitoes

Recent testing has confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in mosquitoes within our Township. While the risk to the general population is low, it is important to take preventive measures to protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites.

Union County is actively monitoring mosquito activity and regularly spraying in various areas throughout the township and county to curb insect populations. These efforts are part of their comprehensive plan to reduce the risk of West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses and protect public health.

In addition to the county's efforts, we encourage all residents to take the following precautions:

  • Use Insect Repellent: Apply an EPA-registered mosquito repellent when outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Wear Protective Clothing: When possible, wear long sleeves and pants to minimize exposed skin.
  • Eliminate Standing Water: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Please check your property for items like bird baths, flowerpots, and gutters where water can accumulate, and empty them regularly.
  • Install or Repair Screens: Make sure window and door screens are in good condition to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.

Union County will continue to monitor the situation and will keep the Township informed of any further developments. Township officials will share the location of spraying activities when the county provides them so those wishing to reduce their exposure to pesticides may avoid the area.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
