Local Girl Scouts Install Communication Board to Promote Inclusive Play

Thanks to the efforts of several Clark Girl Scouts, the Caitlin Nelson Park is now home to a new communication board designed to support inclusive play for all children. The board features colorful symbols that represent common words and phrases like “slide,” “help,” “play,” and “friend,” allowing children—especially those with speech or developmental challenges—to express themselves and connect with others.

"We thank these inspiring young women for their vision and dedication to making our community a more inclusive place for everyone," said Mayor Angel Albanese. Their work is a reminder that meaningful change often starts with young people who care deeply about others. This communication board will open doors for children who may otherwise struggle to be heard, and that’s something we’re incredibly proud to support.”

The project was spearheaded by three eighth-grade scouts, Alyssa Arnold, Jemma Galczynski, and April Fleckenstein from Troop 41248, who recognized the importance of creating a welcoming environment where every child can feel heard and included. This Silver Award project brought a meaningful addition to life, offering children new ways to interact, communicate, and play together.  Girl Scout leader, Leigh Anne Jadro supported the girls' efforts throughout the project.

Can you help the cats in our community?

Volunteers and Donations are Needed to Help Clark Community Cats

The Township of Clark has a Trap, Neuter, and Return (TNR) program in place to help manage the stray and feral cat population. Volunteers play a vital role in trapping, transporting, and returning cats after they’ve received care.

TNR is a humane and effective method for reducing the number of stray cats, supporting public health, and lowering shelter intake. Through this program, cats are professionally trapped, vaccinated, neutered, and then returned to their familiar environment.

We’re looking for volunteers aged 18 and older—no experience necessary. There are a variety of roles available, including options with little or no direct contact with animals. If you’re interested in helping, please call or text Gail at 973-745-8452. The cat community needs you!

If you aren't able to volunteer your time, please consider making a donation to the program.   Make checks payable to Township of Clark, please place a note in the memo section "Animal Trust Account."   Then mail to Clark Township,  at 430 Westfield Ave. Clark, NJ 07066.

Emergency Home Repair Grants for Seniors After July Storms

Press Release from UC for Senior Residents:

The Union County Board of County Commissioners is launching the Storm-Related Emergency Home Repair Grant Program to assist senior homeowners affected by the severe storms that hit the region on July 3rd and July 14th. This grant is available to Union County residents aged 62 and older who own and occupy a single- or two-family home that sustained damage from the recent storms. Eligible low- to moderate-income homeowners can receive up to $10,000 in funding to help cover necessary repairs—and the grant does not need to be repaid.

“After such devastating weather events, it’s vital that our seniors feel safe and supported in their own homes,” said Commissioner Chairwoman Lourdes M. Leon. “This program is a direct investment in their recovery and in the stability of our communities. We want to make sure no one is left behind.”

To qualify, homeowners must be current on their mortgage and property taxes. Once an application is submitted, an inspection will be conducted to determine the scope of repairs needed, and a cost estimate will be prepared to establish the grant amount. For homeowners who may need additional support beyond the $10,000 grant, Union County also offers the Home Improvement Program, which provides interest-free loans with no repayment required until the property is sold or transferred.

This program is available to all income-eligible residents, regardless of age. For more information or to begin the application process, please visit www.ucnj.org/storm or contact Development Directions, LLC at (732) 382-8100.
